What is Reading Recovery?

What is Reading Recovery?

Reading Recovery is an accredited school based literacy programme for the lowest attaining children aged five or six that enables them to reach age expected levels within 20 weeks.

It involves a short series of 1-1 lessons for 30 minutes every day with a specially trained teacher. These lessons are in addition to their literacy lessons in class. The goal is for children to develop effective reading and writing strategies

In order to work within age related expectations for their year group. The programme is different for every child, starting from what the child knows and what he/she needs to learn next. The focus of each lesson is to comprehend messages in reading and construct messages in writing, learning how to attend to detail without losing focus on meaning. The lesson series finishes when the child is able to read and write without teacher support, at the appropriate expectation for their age.

The lessons include assessment, reading known stories, reading a story that was read once the day before, writing a story, working with that story as a cut-up sentence, re-constructing it, and reading a new book.
